Was it different dies or just cracks and chips that led to these defects? Also what is it about this type of defect that gets them labeled variety? If it is just a issue of numbers found how many coins alike are needed to make it a variety?

There are different causes for them. Some are a result of hub doubling, some are die chips, some die cracks. Some are recognized varieties, like the 64 extra spine, the 65 extra bud etc. As far as how many it takes to get that classification lm not sure but maybe someone else will know that.

There are extra spines, extra buds and worms and now hub doubled leafs. I have posted a 1971 and two 1964s in my album.

The one l am most proud of so fai is the '57 extra spine. After searching countless rolls l found 5 of them, all high grade but brown. I recently bought 5 more rolls of '57s (all BU) and found 4 more. So now l am up 9 of them found. As of yet l havent heard of anyone else finding one. I will try to post a better pic of it this weekend.
