Quote: Carl, what is this "shiny" thing you mention? I've heard of low grade early copper called many things but "shiny" isn't one of them. From Wikipedia: Quote: Polishing is the process of creating a smooth and shiny surface by rubbing it or using a chemical action, Oddly enough Chicago type slang produces terminology seldom used in other places. I've noticed individuals from most places are finding it difficult to understand Chicagoans. Shinny is normally anything that shines, glitters, etc.

For me, it is a hobby and an addiction. There is no way I could give it all up. I do not see a problem with that.

I agree with everyone, so far. As long as the "monster" does not wreck your life, I think that you will be ok. Although I wish I could "settle" for the condition of my 7070. The upgrading can be very expensive!

I have to agree that coin collecting is a hobby that I am addicted to. I did take a lengthy sabbaticle from purchasing coins while I raised my kids like I think many people did or will do. But now I am back at it and would fight if I had to give it up.

While reading this thread, I kept thinking of the guy who proposed searching sewer systems for rare coins on these forums. He seemed to genuinely enjoy it and because we all shared an interest in coins, we discussed how it could be safely done. Compulsive or not, that's what a hobby is all about and I wish more people found similar inspiration in life.

My wife thinks coin collecting is MUCH cheaper than boooze smokes and drugs, an there is a profit to be made, if you want to!

I haven't been to a coin show in about 6 months. I'm currently sitting in the corner on the floor shivering and pulling out chunks of my hair...

I consider myself an addict, reason being, I constantly think of coins: >My wife will be talking to me, I'll be staring at her right in the eyes, however, my mind will be on the auction win of that precious scarce coin I won earlier in the day. >I'll postpone buying another new vehicle and just plug the holes in my 11 year old van to barely keep it on the road so I'll have enough money for that coin I've been longing for. >I'll buy cheaper groceries to save money to buy coins with. Less expensive meats, constantly use coupons, look for sales, buy food in bulk, etc. >I'll make due with old outdated clothes so I can save money for coins. >I love, I love I love buying, collecting saving coins! YES, I'm AN ADDICT! (and I hope there is no cure) Glenn

Quote: I haven't been to a coin show in about 6 months. I'm currently sitting in the corner on the floor shivering and pulling out chunks of my hair... Possibly said as a joke but that does sort of happen to me. Since we have 2 to 4 coin shows a Month, every Month, all year long and all within about 15 miles or less. If the weather or something else happens to make me miss an entire Month of no coin shows, I really start getting irritable.

Close your eyes and imagine not being able to collect coins, or look at your own coins, or even come here to ccf for a day. Now imagine a week without it. Really see yourself getting up, showering, brushing your teeth, going to work, going to bed, seven times in a row without collecting. Now imagine a month. Now a year.
Did your heart rate go up? Did you start rationalizing how that's not possible, how no one would actually stop you, how you would defeat any measures taken to stop you? Were you not able to think about it at all as your mind diverted to something else because such a thought was too uncomfortable?
That works for almost anything you think you might be addicted to.

Quote: t is interesting to see that there is an ad on this page that discusses drug or alcohol addiction. Coincidence? Ad space selling is getting more sophisticated. Software finds keywords on a page and matches the ads to them.

@glenzy1 I agree with you. I am like that a lot as well. I think that collecting can turn into an addiction very fast. I'm not at that far of an extreme but I have had to look at what I was doing and say " Hey, you need to cool down!" I kind of do things in spurts too. I will be looking to complete a certain section of a collection....take a bit of a break...then try and fill another section...little break and so on and so forth. Find this helps me to not get TOO involved and keep it within my financial means. CHEERS!
