Nice coin Malibu! One of mine looked just liek it. So I have a question. If the mint makes a set, and packages it, be it Uncirc or Specimen, and then someone sends the sealed set to a third party grading service, would they have to grade them based on what the set is, or would they grade the coin for the condition it actually is? And how do the ratings in Charlton come into play? Would not the above Loon be a "non-circulated" coin, in "mint state" (since it was sealed by the mint)? I have never seen TPG grade something like "VF-20 NC"? Is that even possible? I can only imagine this scenario getting worse if it was a specimen set with the matte finish and the coins were as beat up as this. In that example, would those even still be graded SP? Sorry to ramble, but this is very confusing.

Oh sorry => I thought you got a coin with five o'clock shadow on the queen ... but sadly, it's just scratches!

The technical grade of that coin would be MS 60 NC. But c'mon the grading scale was never meant to deal with bottle cap grade new coins. It's basically an Impaired NC strike.

I'll go back to the RCM or any grocery store and buy rolls of 2012 loonies later this year and there will be a few decent ones in there, maybe MS-63 if I'm lucky, and each one will cost me exactly $1.00. I stupidly paid the RCM $7.92 including tax and delivery for the above 2012 loonie in a "collector set" that was "carefully selected", yet it has absolutely no collector value, would maybe grade AU-55 if it wasn't known to be an UNC coin, and that's a shame. But I am not surprised, have learned my lesson and will never buy an UNC set again!

I agree with you 100% malibu. These will be my last UNC from the mint.

On the up-side, it's possible these sets in early 2012 may have the only solid-nickel loonies and toonies for 2012. It's doubtful you'll find rolls of them. Soon we'll have the plated-steel type for circulation.

Sissel,
My thoughts exactly! I just received mine in the mail today (yes I know I 'm a little late - but better than never!). I too noticed that the 2012 $1 and $2 coins were 2011's compositions. Actually, that is why I'm here in this out dated thread. I was curious to see if this metal composition was normal or not for an uncirculated set. The same is for the "O Canada" set.
This is my first time ordering from the mint and it will be my last time. I receive better and faster service ordering items from the US mint. How pathetic is that?

Sorry to hear about the quality on them. Maybe you can return them for a refund?
Maybe go to a coin show and cherry pick out a nice set or two?

Well, after reading about everyone else's experiences, I took a chance and went to the local postal outlet to pick up an uncirculated set. I had the intention of checking multiple ones for quality, but it turns out they only had one left. I checked each coin, and was pleasantly surprised. The loonie has a few minor bag marks, but not any more than I've seen in the past on coins straight from mint rolls. All the rest of the coins are in excellent condition, with just the odd tiny flaw. It sounds like I got lucky, but I'm very happy with what I got.

What should I say? I got mine in Vancouver Boutique. Condition: Scratches, etc. Pricing: Almost ten times over face value. There's even tax. There nothing I could do about this. I don't like complaining, so I switched to the US Mint. Only about 2 times over the face value and the coins are in better conditions. No taxes and better designs.

It baffles me that you can buy 5 1812 Comm. Twonies from the mint shipped for $10. They are in the same basic packaging as the Unc Sets. However an Unc set (business strike) with $3.91 face is $21.95? To me that is 18.04 to make the envelope glossy.
Why is there tax on an Unc set? Is it only because they are sold over face value?
