Here is a 1958 Franklin that I took from a mint set. Never saw the strange gouge on the reverse until I got it home.

That's really bizarre. Whoever got it in 1958 should have sent it back for replacement.

It is a nicely sized struck-through error, rather unusual for a coin from a Mint Set. BTW, I love that original Mint Set toning

The Mint was not too fond of returns back then, they even included a note stating as much-

Please do not ask us to make exchanges or adjustments.

If there should appear- what may seem to you- a defect or scratch on a coin- it is, no doubt, a crease in the packaging material. We tell you this to save us both unnecessary correspondence.

And to think that people complain about the Mint so much nowadays, they really had an arrogant attitude about things back in the day when there was only a mailing address and no phone or website.

@biokemist6, so what caused that "stuck through" condition? A blob of something? Is it just one coin or does that condition happen to a series of coins?

Most likely caused by either a thin scrap of metal or press gunk(hardened mixture of grease and metal dust). A struck-through error can be a one-time event or it can occur over multiple strikings. Best instance of a multiple strike scenario would be die detail becoming clogged with press gunk which will remain until the die is inspected or it falls out on its own. When the clog dislodges itself while coins are being struck, one final error could be created in the form of a dropped letter error.

Not really what you want to pay a premium for in my opinion
