need help identifying this coin, I am a novice but have read about it and can't distinguish if its a 1916 or 1917 or neither. hoping someone can help, thanks!  |

what I the difference between variety 1 and 2 and how can you tell?

Variety 2 had the much more triangular fold that actually points at the foot. (FYI: 1916 SLQs were all minted at the Philadelphia mint and therefore have no mint mark versus the S for the San Francisco mint your coin has). . BUT, the easiest way to tell the difference between the 2 varieties is on the REVERSE. Type 1 reverse has no stars beneath the eagle and Variety 2 has 3. Examples: 1917 S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety 1)   1917 S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety 2)   Edited by Moe145

found it in my pocket, it was apparently given to me as change at a store I was at some point during the day

Since the date is not identifiable, it's worth approximately its weight in silver, which is about six bucks right now. There's a chance an SLQ expert might be able to nail it down.
Finding a Standing Liberty in your pocket change find is quite a nice bit of luck!

I'd go right back to that store and ask to buy all of their quarters! Wow - great luck!
Others have pointed out he diagnostics, and it is unlikely that in that condition anyone can determine the exact date. Its worth about spot. Still - alot more than the .25 the clerk thought they were giving you.
