I've search high and low for a proof set for the Lincoln, Bicentenial and can seem to find a set without paying through the roof.

What gives? What makes this set so special?

A penny is just a penny right?

There were four Lincoln designs made in 2009 since it was the Centennial of the Lincoln Cent. I believe that the 2009 Proofs were the "throw-back" composition;

four (4) proof 95% copper one-cent coins featuring the four 2009 one-cent reverse designs

Unless you were looking at the LN6 Lincoln Chronicles Set - $135+

The Silver Proof sets - $144

The Clad sets - $15

It depends on which one you are looking for.

...and it was the first year of the State Quarter Program...Territory expansion (thanks Andrew289 for pointing that out).

Yes, the 2009 Lincoln Cent proofs were made using the old 1909 composition as opposed to the 1982-present "Zincoln" composition. Thus, the higher prices. I personally bought each proof coin individually off ebay a few months ago and got the whole set for less than $12.

This is not true.

The United States Territorial Program was issued in 2009. The State Quarters Program ended in 2008.

Thanks

Glad to have you here. And always ask questions. Gets people thinking. MAYBE.
The 2009 Lincoln Cents, Pennies, are the 100th anniversary of that coin. The US Mint produced 20 different ones which include the Proofs and Uncirculated types and one from each Mint.
Mostly due to all the advertising and popularity, almost any 2009 coin became a hoarders fun thing. Many people, dealers, collectors ran out and accumulated as many of almost anything with a 2009 date on it. They missed my 2009 auto license plate though.
It is taking a few years for those to realize that it will take about 30,000 years, + or - a few hundred, to make all those worth the hoarding though. This happens with almost all new things at first and once the newness wears off, prices drop and availability returns. By patient. In about 20 or 40 years you will be able to buy all of them you want. MAYBE.

Proofs are not for circulation so no a penny is not just a penny in this case.
SMS P & D Satin finish are also 95% copper.
Expect to pay about $15 for either the 4 coin set of proofs or the 8 coin SMS satin finsh.

The bank boxes "are" through the roof nearing $300.

It seems like sets of just the cents, or rolls of the cents, or the Lincoln Chronicles set are pretty pricey, but I got a silver proof set (which includes the four S mint cents) for roughly the same price I paid for 2010, and it seems the 2009 complete uncirculated sets aren't that much different from other years.

you wanna talk about paying through the roof. I'm putting together a PCGS PR70 2009 set. I have the four cents and the silver Kennedy left to buy and I'm not looking forward to it.

Ebay: You can buy the ungraded set for $15-20, and PF69 graded sets for $35-40, that price has been the same for about a year now. Funny, ANACS was grading by the roll, you can still find those for about $25 for both P&D, kinda neat. Boxes are selling between $50-100 right now.
