Hello--I just started back into collecting and am curious about grading and companies who do it. The only graded coin I have is a 1979 Anthony $1 near date. I bought it quite a few years ago, not sure why, but it looks nice. The slab says it is MS63 and slabbed by PCI. Are they a good grading company or is there better? Most of my better coins are either in Dansco albums, or 2x2 coin holders by Day Coin Holder(self seal). Those are then put in archival pages in my loose leaf binder which is zipper sealed. How are slabbed coins kept? Boxes? Thanks, got a LOT of catching up to do.---John

That's an accurately graded coin. It couldn't do better because of the mushy strike on the reverse. If you look you will see that most of the details on the eagle are obliterated. This is not the coin's fault- but the quality of the strike and the state of the die. You can also see the softness of the strike on the obverse on Susan B. Anthony's cheek. Those aren't scratches that you see there but annealing chatter from when the planchets were being prepared for coining. Thanks for sharing the coin.

And PCI of this era was fine. There's nothing to be worried about especially at MS-63.

Thanks for the info. This is turning out to be a very informative
site. Is it me or is there a mark, almost like another star or "shadow"
on the first star after the 1 in 1979? I also noticed
a mark like that on my non slabbed 1979 Anthony $1 far
date.---John

You have the less-common Near Date/Wide Rim variety, worth $10-15.

Why is that coin slabbed? SBA's are the ugliest US coin ever! Just sayin....
