Hi all,

I have a coin I can't identify. The only characters I can read are 'BR' (Britain?) and a 'U'(?). And I don't recognise the person on it. Can someone help?

Regards, Martijn

Yep, it's a British Copper Company token. The obverse figure and legend is "BRUTUS", assassin of Julius Caesar. The token is undated, but no doubt struck in the early 1800s, primarily for colonial use. There are numerous varieties, the exact details of attributing I am unsure of, but they're listed in the Withers catalogue (and other reference books that use Withers numbers) as #618 to #625. My 2010 edition "The Token Book" catalogue lists it at 4 British pounds in Fine.
