50c searchers got it down, but to mark my 5c would be like going over them 2X. A son-in-law is a teacher, baseball coach, but most helpful (to me) is a dance chaperone.
He showed me a simlpe, effective way to tell if I'm spinnging my wheels, box after box. He sprayed a spread-out pile with quinine (tonic water), let them dry and suprisingly many glowed under a blacklight. The lenght it remains on the surface probably alters results. But if you're in a small town like mine which has quick turnover on coin, this may prove something.
I expect biokemist will straighten me out.

That is very strange to do. And I would think wasting the tonic water isn't worth the expense? I imagine if you had a very large container to save the tonic water, that would reduce costs some.

How often do you get coins and do you buy and sell them at the same bank? Even if you don't, since you are in a small town, you can still get the same coins back, so I see your point.

How small is your town and how many businesses are in it?

I wouldn't be bothered with it. It sounds too much of a hassle.

I agree with wquinn. It really seems like too much of a hassle. There are millions and billions of coins to be searched. More then enough for all of us. It is true that there are times we are searching through other hunters dump but that is part of the search. Maybe they missed something. Maybe they aren't checking for everything you are. As long as you aren't dumping at the same bank you pick up from I wouldn't waste much time marking nickles. IMO
Rest in Peace

Get a black light pen and stripe the edges.

the only reason I would ever be tempted to mark nickels, is if I were finding NO keepers for each box. As long as you are finding keeps, it seems as if you are getting different coins, so not sure why marking them would matter.

I dont want to search for the stripe marks, boxes getting very light on goodies, and the hoppers in Boise dont hold millions.
And quinine is not expensive, probably the cheapest substance I can think of. How long does it take to spray down a box?
About 2 min. And I never reroll.

I search far to many nickels to even consider marking them, I search boxes of halves and see lots of marked coins but am still finding silver mixed in. I only search brinks boxes of nickels and am still finding plenty of keepers per box so I think for the time being we are not in a desperate situation like with quarters and halves.
Rest in Peace

Another thing you could do is purchase a lazer machine and microscopically print your name on each coin. Then with the use an Electron Microscope, you could start scanning all the Nickels you get to see if they are yours.
Or start driving to another state for your Nickels.
Or stop collecting Nickels.
Not sure about your town but most banks do buisness with organizations that take money from one place and eventually it is placed somewhere else. Even if you did get your own coins back, what have you accomplished? The Money spent attempting to track your coins could be spent buying coins.
