Anyone have any idea of what this might be? It is a very light coin. Weighs in at 4.66 grams.

Makes me think it's some sort of replica or something.

Opinions would be welcomed.

Thanks!

Definitely from Reader's Digest, also - I have one of those, too.

Alas, as has been pointed out already, it's a replica. Specifically, a brass replica of an ancient Greek coin, a silver tetradrachm from the city of Gela. We've seen a dozen of them here on the forum over the years, so don't feel embarrassed - they fool lots of people. See this thread and follow the chain of links back to see a few more examples, plus a link to what a genuine coin looks like.

Apart from one that was sent to me as a gag-gift by a friend in America, I've never seen them here in Australia, so whatever Readers Digest or TimeLife Books promotion it was used with, it didn't make it this far.

Altouugh these copies are worth very little, that does not stop them from being collectable. There is no intention to deceive, and they provide a cheap introduction into the world of ancient coin collecting.

By all means, keep it and enjoy. I would; I have a few different ones, but they are not from the Readers Digest series.
Rest in Peace

Argh... In person it is very hard to make out the word copy. I guess the flash of the camera brought it out. Didn't really scrutinize the pics before posting, but yes, clear as day, the word "Copy".

Well at least my instincts were right.

Thanks everyone.

That is the second Readers Digest copy I have heard about. Where would I find information on the original series, including what copy-coins they made?

I have taken pictures of a coin before and couldn't make out certain things but as soon as I looked at the pictures I could see the very thing I was wondering about
