It could be, or it could just be discoloration. Is the little bit magnetic?

Well, there are 3 options, 1. It is not magnetic 2. it is to small 3. my magnet is not strong enough.

It's pretty tiny, so it is probably a combination of #2 and #3; a plastic fridge magnet is probably not gonna do the job. Do you have any old speakers or hard drives you could scavenge a stronger magnet from? Hard drive magnets can be really, really strong. I've got one from a fat ol' 500 MB drive that requires a putty knife to pry off the fridge. A reasonably strong magnet should be able to pick up Rice Crispies.

I see what appears to be rust and verdigris on the iron portion. Looks like an iron strike through to me.
