Over on MSNBC: Quote: Would you mind a couple of $1 coins clanking around in your pocket if it could save the government some money?
The U.S. General Accountability Office released a study Wednesday that found replacing the dollar bill with a dollar coin could saving the federal government $4.4 billion over 30 years.
"With the current budget situation, we felt Congress needs to be aware of all the viable options for gaining financial benefits, and replacing the dollar note with the dollar coin provides such a benefit over the long term," Lorelei St. James, the GAO's director of physical infrastructure, said on the agency's website. I love it how....in order to work up an impressive looking budget number they have to express it over 30 years...lol
If they just said....save 14 million a year it wouldn't get much attention. Either way...I am on team coin.

I would side with the dollar bill. I would not want to have 20 dollar coins in my pockets, my pants would fall off.

That's what they print $20 bills for....lol
Who keeps 20 dollar bills in their pocket anyway? Well...unless you are going to that establishment that parts you from them one at a time....lol

Not to be snide, but that's what fives and tens are for. Few people carry 20 ones in their wallet on pockets anyway. Too bulky.

From the article... Quote: By then, many of you might not care whether paper or coins win out because cyber cash could make the debate moot.
According to a November report by ABI Research, "mobile wallets are coming," and the number of people paying with their phones will hit 594 million globally in 2016. It would not surprise me at all of this is how the Coin v. Paper debate finally ends.

Im on team coin. I love the dollar coin, and I wish more businesses would use them more often. After traveling overseas, I can honestly say that there is very little inconvenience associated with their use. I would also like to see a 2 and 5 dollar coin, but thats wishful thinking. Force the change, and people will come around.

What's 4 billion over 30 years when we're still running trillion dollar yearly deficits?

I prefer the bill to the coin, only because I currently find the dollar coin small and ugly. If they were to make the dollar coin larger with a nicer design or multi sided or bi-metal or anything that is attractive then more people would be willing to handle them and use them.
Why don't they take have a nationwide poll of various designs and let the people vote on the design that we prefer (or if the options are bad, then we choose "none"). They expect us to use them, right? The more people that likes the coin. the better chance that it will get used in hopes of eliminating the paper bill.
The government's track record has not been too good lately with dollar coins. We have them and don't use them because they are not something we like looking at.

If they do away with the dollar. I will have to do away with my moneyclip. Kinda hard to have a bunch of $1 coins with that $20 wraped around them....

I'm all for a cashless system, but the problem with that, too much control of what the government can monitor. Hence more reason for them to tax us. But I'd love to see the dollar coin replace the dollar note. If the BEP doesn't want to be bothered with upgrading the plain old ugly design, then they aren't interested in keeping it. And I agree with CajunLady. Make a nice dollar coin and everyone would love to use it. How can you turn down a deal like that?

I'm for the dollar bill. If I pay cash for something I usually receive dollar bills back and it'd be annoying to receive 1 $10 bill and have 3 or 4 dollar coins jingling in my pocket. Then I wouldn't want to continue to carry them so it's not like I'm going to pocket them the next day in case I need a dollar.
Even more. Ladies at "gentlemen's clubs" will need a canister attached to them to collect their tips.
Waiters and Waitresses would be in a similar boat. Could you imagine one carrying home 30 $1 coins from their tips?
