I have the 31st and 37th editions of the Krause 1901-2000 guide. I don't take the values from any price guide without a few grains of salt, but they generally give some decent guidance on relative coin values.

Anyway, I recently bought a West Germany, One Mark 1957J, XF, KM#110. The 31st edition lists the value in XF = $9, UNC = $175. The 37th edition lists XF = $100, UNC = $500. The 37th edition must have a typo, as the price I paid was much more in line with the 31st edition value. Can anyone look up the value from a more recent edition?

Thanks, Rob

Hey, I do not have a later edition of the guide but like you said, you should take values from catalogs with a few grains of salt. IMO, you should even almost completely disregard catalog prices if you want to have a general idea of the value of an item. You may already know that, but sometimes an item is worth 5 times less than the value in the catalog. What does that tell you ? Even if you see a huge increase in the value from one edition to another, your best chance of getting a general idea of the current value of an item is to check by yourself how much an item sells for currently on websites such as ebay and other places where that item is sold.

My 39th Edition still lists XF-$100 and UNC-$500. IMO Krause overvalues all 1 Marks of that period (KM#110).

I believe the NGC listing has the current Krause values. It's at $100 in EF.

Part of the problem with overvaluing may be that whoever is supplying Krause with pricing data for these coins is using the stricter German/European grading standard. So for "EF" in the catalogue, you should be reading it as "AU".

Thanks for confirming, everyone. I paid $3.50 ... which is probably what I'll someday sell it for ... unless I can find the one German guy who bought at $100 and forever skewed the Krause valuation.

The grading discrepency Sap describes makes sense, as VF for this coin is listed as $6 in my newer Krause edition.

And Baanos ... the Krause guide is indespensible when I talk to my wife about my latest coin purchases. Needless to say, I'll show her this purchase and the value from my newer Krause edition!
