Just found a box of old coins, etc. in plastic bags from the family and just working through them. Some like this one had been polished in the past; not guilty!

This appears to be some sort of badge, medal or what have you; made of brass and originally had a ring at the top; now broken off.

Does anyone know exactly what it was?

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

Looks like a fantasy piece. Something like a 2 pound double sovereign.

Thanks for your reply fioti; I forgot to mention the size which is 18mm, 1.3mm thick and it weighs 5.8grams.
Not sure what a 'fantasy piece' is? Would it have a low gold content or just be all brass?
Mike.

I suppose the best way to describe something like this is Costume Jewellery. The double sovereign piece shown would have been worn on the watch chain (also probably brass)of someone who liked to look good, but couldn't afford the real thing. And in those days, that meant maybe 90% of the population.

Thanks for the explanation alganbarerap; would this have been made in the period of the real thing or a Victorian copy?

Victorian era is more likely.
