Just getting back into the hobby after a long absence. Back then split grades on coins was pretty common particularly on MS coins, one grade for the obverse and one for the reverse if both didn't grade the same. I'm not seeing that now. Is that something that's gone by the wayside?

I don't think any TPGs do that and I don't see dealers advertising it either, so I think it has gone away. Instead, they usually pick a grade in between, depending upon how far apart the 2 grades are.

yeah the Obverse carries most of the weight so if the Reverse looks better than the Obverse they will usually go by what the Obverse grades unless the Reverse is spectacular. If the Obverse is better than the Reverse I believe the Obverse carries about 80% of the grade

Great question. I have also heard that you should go with the worst grade, but I agree that there should be some average grade, weighted toward the Obverse in most cases.
