I'm not sure if I should have started a new thread or not, but this is a different question concerning the VDB initials on the Lincoln cents.

A fellow in town that knows a bit more than I do regarding coins wasn't even aware or worried about the fact that the initials are present on the Lincoln cents 1918 and later. He was very aware of them on the 1909 cents, however.

I looked online and also in my ANA Grading standards book and saw no mention (unless I missed something) about the initials being a grading factor at all.

Currently, I am sorting through my wheat pennies and, especially with those from the 50's, I am trying to determine which ones are my best coins and wonder if the visibility of the initials is important

My question to the forum, then, is are the initials a grading factor as far as any of you are aware of?

Non-issue. The VDB on Lincoln's shoulder is not used in grading.

Thanks. I'll quit spending time looking for them. Onto something else!

It is interesting to see if you can find any with missing initials from a Grease Filled Die. Like some people save the ones with the missing FG. Maybe you can save some with the missing VDB? Like one of each year? It would make an interesting set.

The VDB is not a factor at all, it's a lower point in the relief. For Lincoln grading, the highest design points are the critical determing factors. On a Wheat cent the high points are: cheek, jaw, lapel, wheat lines, wheat grains.....and don't forget the rims. Generally, the rims are not used, but I like to check them out a bit closer on those AU-MS sliders and just overall condition on MS coins.
