Just curious...It takes some work, and you have to be careful with Shipping, but I picked up an 03 Silver Mint Set today for $46 delivered. Contains 1.3 ounces of silver.
Anyone else taking a similar path, or just going with the standard Eagles, Rounds, etc?

buying silver with .900 purity and up ... no matter who minted the coin, if I can get it at the spot - I'm good. Most of the time I can get those coins slightly below the spot ($2 dollars at least). These coins go up/down with silver.
So, you got pretty good deal.

I have purchased a silver mint proof set for my 7-year-old son every year since his birth and plan to continue until he is 18, at which time he gets them all. I don't really expect them to be a particularly great investment, but you never know...

Not really - to be an investment I would have to sell it in the near future based on something other than emotion! My husband teases me because every time I buy something with the intent to trade, it never gets traded!

Not buying as an investement, unless I can find them at spot or cheaper, which is not easy. US Mint sets in general are not a good investment (of course it depends how much you pay), but after the Mint issues them, they usually drop in price.

I don't buy the proof sets, but I do put together bullion sets. I'm still new to this but I am trying to finish silver maple set all mint sealed, wildlife series all mint sealed and then going to Koala. I started for investment then like CoinsKelly just liked having them...so new plan. I put together the set because I like the coins, I like having something complete...I like they are original. Now I will keep going with my sets but at the right price point I will sell them for a profit. I will hold them long term if I had to and if I couldnt get what I want for them down the road in my lifetime...I will give it to my daughter to continue or sell. For me, a nice profit will be fantastic but in the mean time I'm going to enjoy looking at them and not just storing them in some hiding place to not be appreciated. My thoughts. CHEERS! P.s. Everyone I'm still looking for mint sealed silver maple dated 2009 and 2011 ! Just saying...help a brother out here! :-)

samsnateQuote: I started for investment then like CoinsKelly just liked having them... Same story with me! I do cherish my Kangaroo and Britannia proofs (which I'm sorry but just have to show some) but when you can get a 10oz bar of silver for the same price of only 3 1oz proofs it makes me think of what's a better investment ...a quantity vs quality debate. I'll never pull out a 10oz bar and gape at it's beauty like I do my proofs I just wish there wasn't such a high premium on these!

I just bought the new 2012 Canadian Silver Proof Set. It's an 8 coin set with the theme of "The War Of 1812" that are all struck on silver planchets. Including the nickel and the cent. Mintage is 20,000. Some of the coins are gold gilded. Didn't buy it for the bullion (2.oz), but rather the beauty and craftsmanship. Very spendy, but, it is stunning. If it turns out to be a "home run", then great. If not, it's still gorgeous and a real work of art and history. Not sorry at all that I purchased it. Probably the most beautiful set I've ever seen.

Quote: My father gets me and my sisters a silver proof mint set every year for christmas Sweet. You guys still have those? Just curious. As to buying silver proof sets... nope, not my thing. I agree that some are stunning works of art and quite beautiful but I prefer ounces to beauty in my collection. Each to their own and all that.

Div, I know what you're saying. Every once in a while, you can snag one for less than melt (not so much recently though). Gives you another option or two on the sell side. You're right. It is a lot of work. The free shipping filter helps on the first pass. I don't pursue it, but when I stumble across a completed listing that went that way, I think "smart move."

I have bought two proof silver sets on ebay, both for about (+-$2.00) melt, and have since resold one on ebay, and still have the other...I check these often, and look for ones I can snag near or below melt when I have nothing else to buy!

I have also found, that when searching for these sets, I can stick to absolutes. I will buy below X, etc. Much easier than when I was purchasing sports cards, and getting tied to a specific card or autograph.

I tried buying some US proof sets with s mints and all at a "too-good-to-be-true price. Turns out they were not clad in silver in '77 and '78 maybe others, and that happens to be the years I invested in. So I got ripped off thinking I was getting a decent deal. I learned something important though. Thought this might help.

I picked up the 93 prestige set the other day. Real nice box and at $35 the price was right.
