It is a common trait on the dollar coins for the writing on the outside edge of the coin to be facing up to the obverse on some coins and on others of the same presidential coin to have it facing the reverse instead?

The reason I am asking is that on some of my Grant dollar coins the writing is facing up to the obverse and on some to the reverse side with Lady Liberty. All of them are from the Philadelphia mint.

All answers are greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance for your helpful and knowledgeable replies.

For business strikes, the edge lettering is a totally random event that occurs after the obverse and reverse have been struck. It is a separate operation. In the case of a proof coin, the edge lettering is on the collar and is imprinted at the same time that the coin is struck and unless there is an error, the lettering will always be "right side up" with relationship to the obverse or "heads" side.

Thank you coinseeker. These were business strikes. I appreciate you taking time to answer.

Make sure to keep an eye out for missing or doubled edge lettering, those are definitely worth more than a brass buck

Thank you for the reminder biokemist6. I have checked the Grant ones I have but will go back and check the ones in my album and in my godson's to make sure none have slipped through past my eyesight. Have an excellent magnifier so I will catch it if it is there or not.... ;)

Checked all of mine and my 14 year old godson's collection. No errors this time but I will be keeping an eye on them from now on.

Have decided to create 2 Presidential albums to see if I can collect a full album of both versions of the coins.

Only finding Philadelphia mints on all of these coins so far.

We did some trading tonight and I now own a 1934 Mercury head dime. I saw a report out saying they are expecting to silver to hit around $45 this summer and around $65 by year's end. Never know for sure but made for interesting reading.
