The Mexican dollar shown below has a German inscription indicating the possessor was on board the SMS Emden at the time of its sinking by HMAS Sydney in November 1914 off Keeling.

The Australians confiscated over 2,000 Mexican dollars from the Emden. Many of these were made into souvenirs and handed out by the Admiralty. The Australian souvenir pieces are scarce.

Regardless of the desirability or not of the "chop" marks, it is a great piece of history with a story. I love old coins!

what a wonderful piece of tangible history.
That would attract major interest in Australia:
the destruction of the Emden ("beached and done for") is a major event in Australian Naval history.
But it also forms part of our military folklore, because when the Sydney took on the Emden, she was escorting a convoy of troopships. Many soldiers saw and/or heard the battle, and recorded it in their letters and diaries. They went on to invade the Ottoman Empire on 25 April 1925, which we call ANZAC Day, so the Emden story has become integral to the ANZAC legend.
