How does this type of error occur? Can someone please explain this to me?
I do not know if the weight is right, but I assume it is since the owner have not mentioned anything about it. He did however mention that the edge might be slightly thicker than normal.

I don't know enough about this coin to comment--but weight and diameter would be a good starting point.
Why would the center of the coin be well-struck, but the edge lettering and design very weak?
I can't explain why, but something about the coin looks more modern than 1840.

Well, the coin is not mine (yet). This is a real coin from 1840, just in really good condition.
I have now asked the owner about diameter and weight.
