Here are the first two purchases for my unicorn collection. Since I bought these for the unicorns, the reverse is pictured first on each of these. The first is a 1994 gold 10 Yuan: The second is a 1997 silver 10 Yuan:

They are beautiful coins, Susan. Do you collect all things to do with Unicorns or just coins? Steve

Very attractive.
I think my daughter is about to embark on an animal theme regarding coins -- Dolphins. I believe it was Triggersmob who posted a picture of a beautiful colorized Australian Dolphin coin recently.

I do not know anything about the Chinese Unicorn coins what years were they minted? as I have never seen them one sale at any of the dealers or the internet. How did you find them?
Thanks, Ron (ronaldb112)

I collected unicorns from the time that I was about 13 until about 15 years ago and still have the collection. When we got this house, I was able to display them again. Not long ago, I was researching a Chinese coin for someone and saw them in the Krause book. They were so pretty that I thought this would be a good way to add to the unicorn collection. I believe they were minted from 1994-97. There are a lot of different denominations available in silver and gold. Obviously, there are a lot that I won't be able to afford for a very long time, but the smaller gold and the silver issues will be great! By the way, both coins above are proofs. I'm still learning how to catch the frosting in digital pictures rather than scans.

Thanks, my youngest Daughter, Kim, now 26 years old, has collected ceramic & glass Unicorns & Clowns, since she was about 14. Her husband, Adam, told me that Kim would love to have a silver unicorn collection. Thanks for the pictures & information.
Thanks, Ron (ronaldb112)

They are easy to find on ebay. Just search unicorn coin. You'll get all kinds of results. There are even some pretty good deals that are Buy It Now. So far, I've tried to keep to US sellers, but I think I purchased one from Malaysia that hasn't arrived yet. I'm not quite as leary of buying Chinese coins from Chinese sellers. I still watch the feedback ratings and be sure to ask questions prior to purchasing. I've been very happy with Disney3838. The two coins above came from this seller. Shipping charges were very reasonable and I received the coins very quickly. Hope this helps.

Very nice. I've never seen these before. What a great way to add to an already nice collection of unicorns. I received a silver Panda coin as a gift and love it. So I guess I'll be checking out the rest of the series!

Susan,
Really beautiful coins... Please let us see the rest of the series when you get it. I was in China and was not impressed with their everyday circulation coinage, but these are great. Are these strictly commemoratives? Berry

I believe they are strictly commemoratives. I don't think they were ever released into circulation, but I have a lot to learn about the series, so I could be wrong.
Edix, is the hobo token created from a silver Buffalo dollar? If so, the price on it is extremely cheap. I would have expected closer to $25.

No, the hobo token is struck from a nickel-sized silver planchet. Both dies were hand engraved by Ron Landis. These were struck as annual medalets to pay tribute to the old hobo nickel carvings. A real such carving by Landis would like fetch well over $1,000. The Gallery Mint Museum Hobo Tokens were initially overstruck on real Jefferson nickels, but Landis changed to a silver planchet so that it would be difficult to attempt to pass them off as authentic hobo nickel carvings. Here's a display of some of the earlier tokens: http://www.gmmnut.com/gmm/gmmhobo.html
