Hey team,

I went to the markets in coffs today to see if I could get my holders cheaper..couldn't But what really surprised me was how dead they were it was like a ghost town at one..down 75% or more of stalls and the main one would have been down 10 to 20%.

So what I'm wondering is 1. is this happening at your local markets that you know of? and 2. or do you think it's the effects of GEM/GFC (or what ever you'd like to call it:) hitting home at the markets or are they just simply over charging and in doing so killing them selves? Business wise that is

The whole retail sector is struggling, not just because of the GFC but also because of online shopping.

When I go to the coin fairs it is really just for a look around because any coins I see there I know I will be able to get for around 40% cheaper on ebay. Even the "Buy it now" prices are usually a lot cheaper than retail or coin fairs

My business (haircare retail/salon) was down 3.8% in 2011 compared with 2010. The year prior was pretty much no growth but the four years prior I experienced roughly 35% growth. All-in-all, I'm still up & my clientelle is a loyal strip shop based shopping experience (we're there to give them the advice that others just wouldn't give). Online shopping will affect the businesses that have poor customer service. Businesses with decent customer service will lose some sales but will retain a good base of customers. A couple things that are changing:
  • CPI is at 3.1% (Dec 2011)

  • My rental increases are at 3% (whereas a lot of retailers have 5-6% increases per annum)

  • Wages haven't really changed too much

  • My stock costs & RRP's from suppliers have increased anywhere from 0% through to about 12%

It's a matter of both sides are playing the game.
Smart traders will start selling online (I've been trading & had a small online presence for about 4-5 years).
Also from community to community the effects will be different; in Coffs it's quite a holiday destination & our $AUD is so high (globally) that I believe a lot of tourism is not around which can count for huge loses/backflips business wise.
That's my few words.
Anyone need some (professional) shampoo? I sell them for a great price.

1.)If there are fewer lookers, it would suggest that fewer people have money to spare on coins. (post GFC problems)

2.)If there is a reasonable turnout of potential customers, it is reasonable to guess that fewer sales could be the result of more on line sales. (the influence of on line sales).

I was at the Perersham Coin & Collectibles Sale in Sydney recently. (2) seemed to be the case. The prices I saw support this guess.

Goatieman, I guess you are fortunate that people can't get a haircut online (yet)

- seems like the Geelong Football Club gets the blame for just about everything these days:
three premierships in five years are not enough ?
