I sent NGC a 1959 Franklin half with the doubled die reverse. This coin was in an ICG holder graded MS-65 and the dealer I got it from didn't know it had the doubled die reverse. I got it back graded MS-65 but the the coin was dated 1952 on the label. The coin was also in a bag stating that the coin was not attributed because "Variety not recognized by NGC." Why not? PCGS recognizes this variety and all the grading services should be on the same page as to what varieties are or are not attributable. To send this coin to PCGS for the proper attribution will cost me an additional $54.00 on top of the $30.00 already paid to NGC for their slab. NGC will re-holder the coin with the proper date for free at least.

The picture of the reverse doesn't show how much detail it really has, the bell lines are fairly distinct but a bit flat just to the left of the clapper. The lettering on the upper part of the bell is more distinct than shown in the photo also. If I had a better close-up lens then it would have been better.

There are at least 4 different DDR's for a 1959-P Franklin.
The "big" one is: 1-R-III; FS-50-1959-801
Yours may be #3 or #4 etc...
The variety MUST be in the cherrypickers book in order for NGC or PCGS to put the attribution on the label.
If you dont know which DDR it is,then you will have to send it in for attribution to someone like James Wiles of CONECA.($5.00 per coin + $5.00 return postage)
On the other hand...NGC put the wrong date on the slab and that makes it an error slab and they are actually collectable in its own right.
I would send it to Wiles and get the attribution....then keep his letter with the coin....leave it in the present slab.If you ever sell it then its a double whammy because not only is it a DDR variety but its ALSO a NGC error slab too.
They may have put a label from a different coin on yours.
I would leave it in that slab for sure.

ANACS will put absolutely any variety on the label if its one they can identify but it is always better to have a letter from an official attributor.

JoeyZ76, thanks for the information. I will send it off to James Wiles for the attribution and I suppose I will not have NGC put it in a new holder.
