Just wanted a consensus about what the community feel about PCGS vs NGC grading. Personally I treat them as equal, however some people prefer PCGS to NGC. Would anyone in the community pay more money for coins graded the same grade by PCGS vs NGC? thank you

MJT: The "slab" or the coin? I always buy the coin. [Not more than 5 or 6, over a period of 5 years. Yes. I buy plastic! But only when the coin is decent. But be aware that many people are fooled into buying the slab. Both are reputable companies. Neither is better nor worse. It just pains me to believe that people , NON coin people, pay good money for plastic. BAD plastic! Oh, would that the CCF reach those who are considering to buy before they actually do so. We try. Maybe not me personally but the more knowledgeable. Oh, but we try ....

Why would anyone have Canadian coins graded by NGC? Do they offer reward miles or something?

No, No reward miles YET.. except a very high price. for one coin geaded at PCGS , I can have 8 coins graded at CCS or ICCS... and NO hassle... no sucking up.. simple mail in and mail back.

1.) For US coins..... PCGS is definitely preferred over NGC. PCGS does command a higher price than NGC. The difference is strongly evident in modern coinage. Here's an extreme example... a 1959-D Jefferson 5c graded by PCGS as ms66 Full Steps sells for $2500.00 same coin, same grade in an NGC sells for $450.00. 2.) For Canadian coins.... I still maintain ICCS is the only way to go for grading Canadian coins. US collectors of Canadian coins who chase after these 'Registry sets' are the ones giving PCGS and NGC all the business in grading. 9 times out of 10, ICCS coins sell for more than a PCGS graded Canadian coin.

Quote: 9 times out of 10, ICCS coins sell for more than a PCGS graded Canadian coin. For common coins, yes, this statement is true. However, for the true rarities out there (including grade rarities), then you will only find those coin in PCGS holders. For the absolutely finest Canadian and Provincial coins that are known to exist, over 90% of them are in PCGS holders. Recent auctions (Canadiana Collection, Belzberg, etc...) are examples that prove this point.

There are other reasons why the true rarities of these fine collections are in PCGS holders, but for the 99% of us collectors who are concerned with coins selling from $1 to a maximum of $10,000, ICCS graded Canadian coins far outsell PCGS graded Canadian coins. ebay history and Canadian auctions history will attest to this . ICCS isn't perfect, but PCGS has a storied history of over grading circulated Canadian coins by miles, overgrading due to adding grading points for 'eye appeal' and grading MS coins in regions where ICCS dares to tread (ms67, ms68).

Ngc is preferred over pcgs for world coins. I like both in general

, MJT! pcgs is perceived as a stricter grader, and grade for grade in US coins, brings more than ngc.

I am working on a group submittal for my coin club. We talked about both PCGS and NGC for submitting our coins. We decided on NGC for a couple of reasons. One we haven't seen a difference in value between the two companies for the coins. PCGS is much more expensive to submit coins too where with NGC/PMG if your an ANA member, your automatically given the ability to submit coins. There has been some talk about how PCGS will grade higher for dealers that are connected with the company. I can't prove this of course, it's just the opinions of a few people. It may be that they expected a certain grade when they sent it the coins, I don't know. Another thing is if NGC will not assign a grade to the coin, they will encapsulate it and give it a designation of "Details", so you will see coins that say EF40 Details then it offers an explanation of why that was assigned, like improperly cleaned, etc. Finally, NGC has a booth at coin shows that we go to, it gives us the chance to hand carry in the coins and submit them therefore we save the cost of shipping & insurance for that one way. Since the cost of getting a coin shouldn't be incorporated into the price, we want to have the coins graded for the least amount of money. I would rather spend money on coins than spending the money on getting them graded. But graded coins should have protected values based on grade.

I do agree with SPP regarding the higher grade coins that PCGS graded canadian coins are actually commanding similar pricing as ICCS graded ones I also notice that if you go to HA auction, PCGS graded canadian coins command same value as ICCS coins while at TCNC or moore auctions, ICCS coins seems to command more value.
However, regarding NGC graded canadian coins, I seem to see more of them recently. A lot of these coins are highly graded and I am quite hesitant to commit to them unless you see these coins or they are priced 1 or 2 grades below ICCS counterpart.

If I was living in Canada then I would be submitting my coins to either ICCS or CCCS as they are local and the mail system would probably handle them effectively. But since I am living in the USA I am a little hestitant these days in sending my coins to Canada if I have to put a customs declaration on the them or basically advertising their value. Therefore, I will probably send my coins to NGC as I prefer them.
But I have seen posts that talk about the grading companies and the problems that are experienced with each one with overgrading, not mentioning cleaned, etc. So, again, grade the coin before commmiting to buy regardless of the holder as it's in the eye of the beholder that matters.

The problem I have with grade rarities showing up in PCGS holders is I can't usually stretch that far, in other words they're usually (I didn't say always) blatantly wrong so when I see them I ignore them for the most part. I get really frosted on a lot of their grading of Victoria coins and early nickel five cent pieces actually, though with the nickels it's the other way around.

Of all of the U.S. third party grading companies, I like N.G.C. the best! I have found over the years time and time again they are the most consistent and the most conservative of the U.S. company slabs I've owned. Glenn
