Hello, I'm new to collecting coins and really need some guidance with the different types of coins grades/bullions etc....what's worth more, n what to collect. Is there a book out there you recommend ?

There's so much to know. Read the Australasian Coin & Banknote Magazine. It's a monthy publication that you might find at your local newsagent. The current cover is: I know there was a post on the magazine recently, so have a read of this & it might help get you started. https://goccf.com/t/112006You can also read this forum, there is some great tips on what coins to look for in ordinary change.

Go to your local coin shop and purchase Greg McDonalds 2012 book, and trust me, read it from start to end, best thing I ever did.

It depends on whether you are looking to collect coins as an interest/hobby, an investment, or a little bit of both, as that will most likely influence your direction.
As aarong has pointed out, the McDonalds pocket guide would be an excellent place to start, giving you an idea of what is out there and what to expect, along with a lot of useful reference information.

to CCF. The best advice I could give you is to read this forum as often as you can and buy Greg McDonalds book, (Costs $35 for the soft cover). McDonalds book generally overprices coins and notes so to get a better approximation I check what they are going for on ebay. If you are going to buy via this site don't make impulse bids. Monitor what similar coins or notes you are interested in are going for so you are better aware of the current market price. Hope this helps.

ditto the above, but I am of the opinion that renniks is the better book. That said, I have both Renniks & Maccas. The most important decision is: what, exactly, do you want to collect ? And, you ought not buy anything until until you've researched it.

I have my foot in the Renniks corner too. At least for the last few years, though noticed very little difference between the last 2 editions, so may go Maccas next year, then back to Renniks the year after.

if in doubt dont buy, search completed listings on ebay to get a price check. hunt around the different ebay sites for bargains, india has some cheap silver coins but most wont ship here, the uk site seems to be the best value to sell aussie coins I found out today. and only spend cash dont go into debt to buy a coin or 10.

If you're talking about Australian coins, try: http://www.bluesheet.com.au/ . Graded valuations require a subscription but the articles, listings, and average circulated valuations are available free.

I do find the Blue Sheet site to be a useful resource for mintages and bullion value on the go. @gman Thanks for posting the cover! Saves me a trip to hunt down a newsagent with a copy to find out what's in it this month
