I make it a habit of trying to buy from the same trusted sellers again and again. Well, the other day, I received a coin I had purchased from just one of these sellers and included in the package was this coin marked as "gift". The coin is in excellent shape and I just wanted to share it with you. I guess this shows that not all sellers are out to pick your pocket.

The coin is a CONSTANTIUS II, AE3, struck at Thessalonica 348-351 AD, RIC VIII 119:

OBV: DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right
REV: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Emperor holding labarum and phoenix, standing on galley piloted by Victory. TESA in ex
2.7g, 20mm

Congrats to you JW! I think that it is great that the seller rewarded a great customer like yourself!

Nice coin BTW! Hard to beat the price!

It looks like it has been painted with something. That doesn't look like patina. Perhaps my eyesight is playing me up again.

I was going to ask about this as I have several 4th century coins that have the same look. Like they have been painted over. Here is another from a different, but trusted seller:

I have a few coins with really glossy patinas w/o encrustation of any kind, and I've wondered at how that forms.
To satisfy my curiosity, I might dab some acetone on an inconspicuous spot on my coin, and see if any lifts off. That shouldn't hurt real patina--right?
Regarding your coin--that "toothed" exergue is interesting--nice gift!

That's a very nice OP coin. I have a Constans with a very similar reverse.

The color is way off. It should be green not gray. I will have to try again.

I am guess, but the "teeth" represent the water or the oars of the ship. And you are right. This feature doesn't usually show very well.

Here is an indoor shot of the same coin. Still not right, but closer to the original:

You might want to play with the settings of your camera to see if you can get different effects and by turning off some other enhancements possibly.

Now I see it--that makes sense!
Your new pictures are better detailed and the patina looks more like what I would expect. I think this is a matter of setting your white balance on your camera--what is your camera make/model? I'm sure this issue could be easily adjusted.

I am using an Olympus Fe47, and I know I have to be the worse photographer in the world. I know nothing about cameras

Very cool that a seller would offer a gift like that (or any gift for that matter). I know I always appreciate an extra touch like that. Plus it helps retain customers and it garners referrals, so it is a win-win!

One CCF member has always added a nice gift whenever I have purchased from him and I always appreciate it and I continue to hit him up when I am looking for coins.
Rest in Peace
