I received this ebay question today and have to think I'm on the front end of a scamus maximus. I do sell lots of Morgans. I'm thinking the next correspondence will be an offer of the coins for an extremely attractive price.... Whatcha think?

Here's the communication:

"Dear Sir,
First excuse my bad english but I am from France.
I see you collect Morgan dollars and may be you can help me.
I bought part of the stock of a retired dealer for my own collection and I found some foreign coins. 4 are Morgan dollars. Each one is in a NGC plastic holder : 1892 MS65 1893 MS64 1897 MS64 and 1903 MS65. Each one with the letter S.
I assume they have some value. Do you know about it ?
Thank you very much in advance."

Guess I'd better check the bank account for a hundred grand lying around eh?

Closer to a half million. The 97s is odd man out.

Seems odd that they'd get thrown in with some yurrupean coins, but if he bought from an unknowledgeable widow, anything's possible.

Most likely scenario is Chinese fake slabs, but you could always see if he'll send them for inspection, at which point you could confirm them with NGC.

If you don't wanna play, relay him to me.

That doesn't quite sound like someone whose first language is French who has bad English. :-)

Anyroads, ask for pictures. At best we can have a good ogle. At worst we can have a good chuckle.

Yeah, and I won the Australian lottery again today but I never played it - that's ten times I've won this year.

And, the royal family of some country I never heard of is in exile and they have determined that I'm a trusted person so we will split their $20 Million if I give them $5000 to flee the country.

All joking aside...you're not the first and you won't be the last person this guy tries to "get help" from. I'd at least attempt to make people aware of the situation so that he is stopped. :(

Actually, I replied to him and gave him the URL for the NGC Numismedia Site. He replied with a big "Thank you very much" and didn't offer me the deal of a lifetime... Who knows? Maybe this guy is rich and doesn't know it.... But then again, the sun may not come up tomorrow....
