Hi everyone, I got this one recently in an uncleaned lot. Yes, it unfortunately is suffering from from notable bronze disease on the reverse, but it looks very interesting and is quite large (27mm/ 1 inch). The lettering does not look clear to me at all when it is in hand (could this be a provincial with an atypical script/ font?) Any help an ID would be appreciated!

With the center dimples I agree it's a provinical. The image looks a bit like Gordian III.

It is a provincial but the obverse legend seems to end in AVgamma transliterating Augustus Latin style rather than the Greek translation CEB(sebastos) of most cities. That might help. The style is pretty certainly mid 3rd century and quite possibly some young ruler like Gordian III, Philip II or Severus Alexander but that is not a certainty. The reverse looks like Zeus seated on a throne. Part of me wants to see the end of the exergue legend as ONTON But I'm not finding a match in a couple obvious places and that could just be imagination.

echizento & dougsmit- Thanks for the input! This coin is in hydrogen peroxide right now, so we'll see if more is revealed. What is peculiar about this coin is that a lot of the text looks kind of blurred. I doubt that this is a barb, but the font does seem a bit off (even before taking into account the possible warping from corrosion.

Hmm, maybe I've found it! Thanks for leading me to Gordian III, everyone. I actually can now see an eagle at Zeus's foot and more of his extended arm. So it is obvious that he is holding a wreath. So do you think that this could be it?

Nice job on finding this one Archraz. I don't think I would of ever found it.

Maybe just soak in dist. water for along while. That stuff might soften up eventually.
