I picked up the latest issue of Coin World magazine. I wanted something quick and easy to use for pricing coins. Is the pricing guide inside the magazine accurate?

I would suggest also eyeing over completed auctions by ebay, heritage, etc. to get an idea of real time market value. Especially if dealing out of hand.

Thanks I am new to the hobby. I just want to have a good idea of what a certain coin is worth before I pursue it.

I agree with using numismedia, I would also recommend you set up a free account at Teletrade, Heritage, and StacksBowers auction houses. By being an account holder you will have the ability to search their "sold" database for auction price history. This along with the numismedia input should give you a honest picture of what specific coins are selling for.

I think if you take 20% off Coin World or NumiNews prices you get pretty close to gray sheet values.

Gatorfan, My advice to any newbie would be to proceed very slowly at first. Get your hands on some research material. There is a wealth of knowledge in numismatic books. Also, don't ever hesitate or be afraid to ask any questions here before you make any substantial purchases. These guys really know their stuff and will help protect you from getting burned.

Though Coin World may not be the best source when it comes to pricing, I think it's a great magazine. It has some great articles and every issue has a section on how to grade a different coin type.

You can never read too much or be too informed. This website has kept me from being burned before on coin purchases. Asking questions is free, education through trial and error is expensive so ask as many questions as you can. Someone will help you here for sure. Remember that those prices in the list are rock bottom trading prices. Eye appeal has a lot to do with price as well.
