Just when I think that I have the right coin in mind, another comes in over the horizon. I really like this "problem free" PCGS Trade dollar as well, maybe even better because it does not hit as hard in the wallet as the 1874-S. What do you think of this one in comparison to the 1874-S Trade dollar? Thanks for your continuing interest! https://goccf.com/t/113326 Edited by oih82w8 03/09/2012 7:29 pm

Personally, I see much less wear on the Eagle of the 74-S. Are those abrasion marks on the slab or the coin above? I'm one for chop marks ;D

Both of those coins are very nice looking. I for one do not like Chop Marks but I have seen a couple Trade dollars that had them in hidden spots that I would own for the right price. But back to the original question, I don't think you would go wrong with either of these coins you are thinking about

I like the 74 S better, this coin looks more toned. I assume these are both seller's pics and you can't compare the actual coins side to side ?

Yes, they are both sellers coin images...I will try to stitch them together for a side-by-side comparison of the images that I have, they more than likely use different lighting techniques between the two as well. Here's a quick piece together; The 1877-S is an AU50 and the 1874-S is an AU-55

Just a heads up, I'm looking at the Eagle's left "knee", the wing tips, and the neck. These spots are worn on the above coin, but contain a lot of detail on the 74-S.

That is probably why this one warranted an AU50 Grade from PCGS; I really like the color of this one (1877-S)! I really like the strike (AU55) of the 1874-S!

Looking at these side by side the color looks off on the '74.

Both are "problem free" PCGS slabs. I have the slab picture of the 1874-S at the house, I will do the same collage with the slabs. Another question; is the "S" on the 1877 the "micro S"?

Both examples are good choices for your type set. As you are torn to which one you prefer I would suggest bidding on the one that ends first. As you have experienced out bidding before this way you will have another back up option. Good luck!

The 1874-S is a "Buy It Now". ($425.00 ppd)
The 1877-S is through a Brick and Mortar. ($360.00 ppd)

I would go for the 1874 s at $400, maybe you could talk them down. Also is your graded 7070 set toned or white with the silver coins? I prefer the non toned coin.

If you held a gun to my head and forced a decision, I'd choose the '74 but both are worthy. The '77 is a slightly better deal relative to market, but the '74 is not a bad price. You're going to be a winner with either coin.
