Does anyone know if the current Toonies that are found in the rolls are of the new steel composition?

I know the ones in the uncirculated sets are nickel/copper but didn't know if the ones produced for circulation in 2012 are produced that way.

According to what I have read, they would be out late March or early April. I wouldn't have thought that they would have produced 2012 circulation coins in the old composition.

Maybe the RCM rep on this forum could give some insight.

I have a roll of the 2012 loon dollars, they appear to be normal... Maybe I will put one under the XRF to confirm.

I hadn't seen any RCM press releases or anything about it other than the articles in January saying it would be late March or April when they would be out.

Since it is already about that time, I was thinking that if they were issuing regular composition coins now then there wouldn't be quite so many of them before they switch over.

Maybe the changeover is delayed.

The new loonies & toonies should weigh less.

Loonie - 6.27
Toonie - 6.92

I wonder if they are going to keep the loons nickel this year, but switch over to steel for all of the commemoratives. Or even switch the loons over to steel half way through, creating two varieties.

The new (further debased) loonies and toonies are supposed to have "security features" such as edge lettering. So I expect the designs will be noticeably different, rather than a simple composition change. The early 2012 loonies and toonies will be the keepers for collectors - lower mintage than what's coming.
