Newfoundland-5-Cent-Coin...-With-Chop-Marks?

Newfoundland-5-Cent-Coin...-With-Chop-Marks?

I found this in a tray of world silver at melt value. To me these look like chop marks, not random damage, but I've never seen them in person before so it's hard to say. Also, all the chop marked coins I've seen pictures of have been large coins meant to be used abroad. So my questions are 1. Are these in fact chop marks? 2. If so, are they commonly found on smaller denomination coins?

Chop marks are most of the time Chinese characters (as a lot of trade was done there).

First, these don't look like chop marks, looks like some kid was messing with around with a knife near his dad's collection.

Second of all, I don't think Newfoundland was doing trade with any Asian countries.

I know they are usually Chinese symbols, and the marks are definitely symbols, not just random gouges. I can't get any closer photo, but the mark on the reverse looks like this

The ones on the obverse are harder to make out, as they are overlapping. I have no idea how a Newfoundland coin would come to be spent in China though.

Not chop marks, unfortunately. PMD, probably deliberate fooling around by someone who didn't know.
