Hmm...very interesting. This obviously means that the "cash only" businesses might have to change their tune, finally.
A cashless society sucks as far as running your own business because everything will be automatically declared...too much tax. I pay for 90% of things with cash; my clients pay around 35-45% in cash.
I'll just continue to say very interesting.

It's sad but eventually we will become a cashless society. We have been forced into it really (for example, most peoples wages get paid into a bank account these days without choice). I know I carry less cash then I used too.

I would have liked some more detail from the article;

How many cashless transactions are taking place? I assume there has been an increase to offset the decrease in the use of cash.

Does the reduction in ATM transactions correlate with with increasing fees? The increase in ATM fees has probably got a lot to do with with ATM withdrawals reducing in my view.

ATM transactions fell to a record low amount! The G.F.C. etc might do that, in general, money is tight so there isn't as much to take out.

I think that we'll end up going the way of the "Octopus Card", used in Hong Kong.
It wins in convenience, and negligible transaction costs.

Slightly off topic but same sentiment.

Australia Post is discouraging stamp use for postage (little printout sticker is preferred) but at same time promoting stamp collecting and special issues (including the mostly disliked PNCs).

I use stamps for virtually all my posting, including ebay sales. I buy MUH (Mint UnHinged -in other words older but never used) stamps from collections for about 75% of face value. For international postage I have to add 10% because that is GST free component only.

Amazing how many people have bought full or half sheets of every issue for years as an "investment". Pity they do not research the trends first.

Jeff

PS. Of course grab every 2010 mob of roos you can find and keep it. I tip those to be a good mover in price in the future.

So that explains why all my ebay post deliveries have all these old stamps on them.

Back on topic - I read the same article about the number of ATM withdrawals being down but I think they are using faulty logic to assume that this is evidence that we are fast heading to a cashless society. The amount of cash in circulation has actually increased according to the Reserve Bank so I suspect that the reduction in ATM withdrawals has more to do with the economy slowing.

That from explains the stamp thing, the amount of early to mid 80's stamps I've received for small coin purchases...they're historic...almost pre-historic.

As for CHQ/SAV transactions the banks are hitting my business for an extra 9 cents per transaction. What a joke! From 11 cents up to 20 cents. The banks never get questioned, just business & home owners get messed up. It's just plain frustrating because the greedy banks get greedier...& with the whole situation becoming cashless in the future makes me question what will happen.

Less ATM transactions does not meen anything. Last year I've stop using efpos and about 4months ago I've stop using ATMs. I just go into the bank and withdraw my money that way. I pay everything with cash apart from online shops plus the places were I buy my silver coins and bars only except cash. I don't recon anytime soon or in the near future Australia will become a cashless society.

I do think modern stamps collecting is dead and coin will be much better choice in term of investment
