I just got notification from the mint that these are now on sale at a price (currently) of $1960. Is anybody planning to get any of these? They look nice, but the $300 premium seems a bit extreme to me.

No WAY would I fork out 300 over spot with gold where it is now for one of those. Like any new item, the newness an price will wear off in time....
I truly believe gold would have to pull back to atleast 1200 an oz., before I would even consider buying back in....

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. After posting, I looked around and discovered that the mint is still selling the 2011 version, so it's not like these are in limited supply or going up in collector value anytime soon.

barryg, if you are pondering with the thought of having an American Buffalo Gold coin (non proof) then here's a great candidate for you: https://goccf.com/t/113496http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...ctionID=4141With the recent price reduction, it's only a tad over spot, probably the best deal you can find any where. I would really want to get it but just so tight on cash right now....

Thanks, but I was actually just wondering whether the proof was really worth that much of a premium. I'm really not looking to buy any gold right now.

Proof coins can be a pretty good investment, especially if the number of coins minted is relatively small. The US Mint web site should have mintage numbers on there somewhere.

Proof gold maple leafs I would buy. They were issued only in 1989, with a mintage of ~10,000 only. You can't find one now for sale any less than $2200, regardless of spot.

I looked, but didn't see any numbers. I'll keep looking, but the fact that the 2011 version is still available makes me doubt they were issued in limited quantities.

Found this info at coinupdate.com: Quote: No maximum mintage has been established and no household ordering limits are imposed. Packaging consists of an elegant hardwood box with matte finish and faux leather inset, along with a certificate of authenticity.
Initial pricing for the coin is $1,960.00. The price could vary weekly based on the average market price of gold.
The US Mint has continued to sell the prior year 2011 Proof Gold Buffalo. This coin originally went on sale May 19, 2011 and has sold 25,802 units as of the latest available sales report. So... It looks like these are neither in demand nor particularly collectible.

A lot of things that turn out to be collectible were not especially unusual when they were first made. Consider the Carson City mint Morgan dollars. At one time, they were worth... $1. Now, they bring a BIG premium... hundreds of dollars in some cases. I found some info on this at: http://goldbuffaloguide.com/mintages/Not sure whether this is of any use but I thought it somewhat interesting.
