Another coin that arrived yesterday, one that I also picked up for the portrait. This was a cheapie that I was willing the risk, but it turned out that Athen looks good, even slightly off-center and damaged. It was another photographic challenge--to capture the best features of both sides without accentuating the problems. In this case, overcast sunlight produced much better results than artificial light.

Another interesting aspect to this thick coin are the edges. The circumference of the coin shows signs of being roughly shaped by filing. Since it's under the patina, is it safe to assume this happened long ago--perhaps to get the flan to weight before striking?
