Well, I'm planning to start my first Dansco/Whitman, but I need some help. Can anyone advice me what collection I should start with? Also which is the hardest collection of all to collect? And which is better to deal with Dansco or Whitman? Thanks

You cant upgrade with a Whitman without using Elmers. I've taken a stab at most everything, but colonial copper will drive you nuts.

There are many, many Album manufacturers out there besides Dansco and Whitman. For some reason this forum is sort of a pro Dansco system. However, if you look into them you would find names like Littleton, Intercept Shield, Harris, United States Mint and lots of others. All have their likes and dislikes. For availability you usually find Dansco in the West, Whitman in the Mid West and Littleton in the East. Mostly due to where the company is located. The amount of different Albums available too is vague. Also, additional pages can be hard to find in some areas. I'm in the MidWest so Whitman material is everywhere. Blank pages and Album covers too are easy to acquire for all Albums. Press on letters and numbers for blanks too are available. The Whitman Albums are blue and many don't like that. Many people like the looks of Dansco Albums since they sort of look like a leather bound book yet those same people well know not to put them out on display. Littleton and Intercept Shield Albums are Green if color of them makes a difference to you. All are made rather well but on this Forum people constantly say Dansco is better quality. Dansco Albums are becoming more and more common everywhere though. Not much help there if deciding but my suggestion is you should look at as many of them as possible and decide which you like for appearance since they are basically for holding coins, not a display item. Putting coin supplies out in the open is just not smart. As a suggestion which is the best to start. Lincoln Cents are probably the most common coins in the USA to start with. Large Cents are almost impossible to collect unless you have an enormous amount of money.

I like dansco albums. If I hold them next to the littleton though - I can't tell the difference.
The Intercept shield concept - to me - is great. They do make a few albums - usually priced a bit more than dansco - but mainly I've used their storage boxes.

One more thing to think about is size. For example Dansco Albums are taller and deeper than a Whitman. If your going to put your Albums on a book shelf, you may want to measure the shelf height to make sure the Albums will fit. Prices too may make a difference since some company Albums are much more expensive than others. As you decide on which to purchase, check out the availability and cost on the internet and local coin shops. And remember that it is not smart to put coin Albums out on display so if they are of different manufacturers, normally only you will see them.

You guys are so much help and the information you tell me is very valuable :D So thanks a lot. Also I have done some research and I think I will start with the lincoln cents.. I found deal of 300 lincoln cents since 1909 to 2012 including some large cents, proofs, and errors. The early coins grade good to fine and the new ones ranging AU to BU. All for 85 dollars what do you guys think?

Collect what you enjoy. Anything involving 1700s coins or gold is difficult. Album preference is personal.

It is hard to say if that is a good deal or not. You would have to list the coins by year, mintmark, and grade and that would take a lot of time. I have seen some good deals on ebay, so the best way to find the best deal is to shop around and compare prices. Shipping to Egypt might be expensive from the US too, so you have to factor that into the price. Like sets from 1959-2012 and sets from 1941-1958 for good prices.

Heard of a coin shop in my area that I have not visited that (from it website) carries some used albums so I thought that I would take a trip there to see what they have. I looking to put together a circulated State Quarter set and thought that a used album would be perfect for it.

I've bought some really nice used Whitman albums at the local shop for $1-2 a piece. The great thing about those 50 year old albums is that they were made in the good old US and you can get some great toning after a while because of how old the materials are.

I personally don't use albums, but 2x2s in a 3 ring binder. Have you considered those? Good choice for what to start with. The Lincoln set can be challenging, I'm still working on mine to this day. I'm afraid it may be one I don't complete though. That 1909 s vdb might do it.

I'm actually doing this :D it is good, but albums look neater :p thats why I was thinking about them. Also that VDB S is horribly expensive :S I really don't know yet what I will do. You are so right, you have no idea how expensive it is to ship products from the US :S Thanks a lot guys :)

The thing to consider is also what condition you are buying the coins in and their long time storage. I personally have all albums and different ones for the different conditions. My Dansco's are for nicer coins (XF or better depending on the series) and Littleton and Whitman for lower grades and extras. I like these because you can pick them up cheap and easily look through an entire collection in a few pages. But, just like everyone else, collect how YOU want to.

If you have not already, you may want to check out EgCollector's posts. He has done very well assembling US coin sets in Egypt.

Whichever album you decide to use make sure the environment you store the album in is stable. Make sure the temperature is right and doesn't fluctuate and that its not humid. All these are factors that will determine the condition of your coins and album.
