First off, I'm sorry. I do not have photos.

The 1982-D Washington Half is not a rare coin- 2.2 million were minted and I assume perhaps 5-10% may have been lost or melted by now.

The coin is surprisingly tough to find in MS-69 because the coin tends to have various hits and hairline scratches. PCGS tends to give better examples MS-68 with the top 15% of the coins submitted getting MS-69.

I went looking for some supplies at my local bullion dealer today and decided to take a look at the dozen or so 82-Ds he had as he had nothing else that I'd care for. Most of his pieces were typical and non-descript- but one was really quite beautiful.

I'm sure it's an MS-68. It has a small tick on Washington's cheek and a hairline at the 8 pm position that you can't miss when you wobble the coin... but what sets the piece apart is the prooflike mirrors which jump off of the coin.

The 82-D half may never be a numismatically sound investment- but special coins like this- are worth checking out and picking up.

You never know whats out there unless you take a look.

Happy hunting.

I bought both Washington Half Dollars from the mint in 1982. I have no idea what they would grade (does not really concern me), but I do like them. Both are in my 7070 because they are my very first commemorative coins.

I am definitely interested in seeing how yours comes back and I hope for the best.

To this day, the 1982 Washington half-dollar remains one of my favorite issues in the modern series -- Elizabeth Jones was a very talented designer/sculptor/engraver. Yours sounds like a great example!

Good luck with the PCGS submissions -- let's hope for a "Pop Top"!

I wish you the best of luck on the grading, but if you can see the nick with the visible eye, it will come back as less than a 68. When you get to a 68, it should look perfect to the naked eye. Those are the ones to cherrypick.
