A few days ago I got this bright red penny in my change. It caught my eye due to the old QEII portrait so when I looked closer I saw that it was a 1965. It must be pretty unusual to get such an old penny that's still so red. Did some digging and it looks like it's of the small beads, pointed 5 variety, probably not worth more than a few bucks, but I thought I'd post it up anyways and see if I'm missing anything about this coin.

These were taken with my scanner, if I start getting into this more I might have to splurge on one of those USB microscopes or whatever the pros use here for taking images!

Nice find. Let's hope it's the first of many in your penny collection.

Actually have to disagree with you collectall, the top line of the five looks to extend past that of the bottom line of the top of the 5. Then again, thats just my Two Cents.

Best guess as to value, maybe $10-15. MS 64 is listed in Charlton at $40.

Course, I'm not much of a penny guy, maybe someone else can chime in who's seen a few of these.

I just looked at it under a magnifying glass, and I'm pretty sure it's the Blunt 5. Hard to see on that picture, it's my first attempt to pic/scan a coin. Maybe I'll wander over to the Photography forum to get some tips!

It's a blunt 5. When it's a pointed 5 (as in Collectall's picture posted above), there is no doubt: the tip of the 5 will very nearly touch the maple twig. Very few PT5's are found in circulation.
