Hi Just looking at that site and noticed that all coins on there only have cent stamped on the shield with lines but mine has daily cent stamped on it and no lines, does this mean mine is a fake. also what does the ryder 1-D etc mean. Sorry for being a bit thick.
Thanks Lee

Part of the lettering is missing but what you have is a Half Cent not a one cent. Ryder was the man who wrote the standard reference on the Massachusetts coinage. Each die variety is identified by a number assigned to the obv die and a letter assigned to the reverse die. All of the 1788 Half Cents come from a single obv die (1) and two reverse dies (A and B). A chart of the 1788 Half Cent varieties can be seen here http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/Col...alfcnt88.jpg (The http://www.coins.nd.edu website is a great site for information on the colonial coins of the US.) Your coin is a Ryder 1-B 1788 Half Cent. Key identification features are the high second 8, and the arrowhead the extends beyond the tip of the right wing. On the A reverse the 8's are equal in height and the wing tip covers the arrowheads.
