Hello I am new to the forum and wanted to ask if anyone would know the value of a 1906 Gold Sovereign coin. Thanks

Hello Mac, welcome to the forum. The answer depends upon a number of factors as the 1906 Sovereign was minted in 4 different mints. London with a mintage of 10,466,981, Sydney 2,792,000, Melbourne 3,657,853 and Perth 4,803,230. Keep in mind mintage figures do not indicate survival rates. Value is also determined by the amount of wear the coin has. Even the slightest amount of wear on a coin that is only visible under 5 - 10X magnification can devalue it. McDonald's 14th edition lists the Perth Mint as most valuable at $300 for almost uncirculated and $500 for uncirculated. The 1906 Melbourne and Sydney have a book value of around $275 for aUnc and $375 for UNC. Considering the mintage of the London (no mintmark) sovereign it would probably be only worth the price of gold, about $190, plus a little. The mintmark can be found just above the date on the reverse (horse and dragon) of the coin as either P, M, S or no mintmark (London). Hope this helps.

Well I have read about all the Australian rarities here and feel, at this time, it would be best for all the Australians to send them over here so I can get a real good mental picture of each and every one. Let me know when you ship so I can start looking for them to arrive. And, don't worry, I will welcome each and every one of them into my home!

No problem! I shall send you all my 1930 pennies, 1923 half pennies, Adelaide pounds, 1855 half sovereigns, 1932 florins, NSW holey dollars and dump etc. Going by the pictures (because that's all I will ever see of one) I think the Adelaide Pound is the nicest looking rarity. The most ugly would be the NSW dump. That is a coin by the way, although "dump" is a pretty good word for it Lol.

I have tried to buy a modern day Holey Dollar and Dump but it seems folks on ebay want them worse than I do EVERY TIME so I finally gave up. Guess I just liked the novelty of the coin as they are unique!

Apparently there's only about 350 Holey dollars and 1500 dumps still left in existence with many of those badly worn. Even a Holy dollar in "Fine" is $65,000! The ebay ones sound like 2003 RAM commemorative reproductions.

Hi pwillow, and welcome to the forum. Catalogue prices are: 1924 F $8, Vf $45 1927 F $4, Vf $16 These are pretty common coins and you would be very lucky to get catalogue price for them. Most dealers wouldn't be interested in these grades, your best bet would be ebay, where you may get 1/4 of catalogue value, if you are lucky. The 1931 dropped 1 may be worth something, can you post a picture?

Dropped 1 could be worth $10-30 if it's a normal London Obverse. Could be worth $1000+ if it's the Indian obverse. Sadly due to the rarity of the Indian obverse it's almost certainly a London coin. The link given by KurtS above will help you tell which one it is.

All three coins previously mentioned are the indian dies, (N's) pointing at the denticals around the rim. Not your common coins! When I work this computer stuff out i'll try putting picture on forum. I've been collecting varieties for a couple of years now and was lucky enough to get all four 1931 die types in an album I bought cheap as. I sold my prize and joy rare mazda RX-3 coupe and blew most of the money, but picked up this album with what was left. Was that a good deal?

Well that depends on if you need a car or not and how much you paid for the coins. If it is a genuine Indian die dropped 1, it was probably a great deal.

Well I saw a damaged dropped 1 indian go at a show a couple of years ago for over $1000 so I'd say you probably did just fine.
