I'm pretty well familiar with the U.S. rare coins, such as 1909Svdb and 1914D Lincoln Cents, and 1916S Mercury dimes, but I was wondering what the Australian counterparts were?

Gary, Australia has it's fair share of Australian Rere coins.

The most Famous being the 1930 Penny and the 1923 Halfpenny.

In modern times a Proof version of the 2005 Mob of Roo's dollar (considered a mule by many) was found in about 20 or 25 - 2006 Mint Proof sets.
The 2000 $1 mule in circulation is also a sort after rariety.

There are plenty of older pattern pieces mentioned in the catalogs worth hundred of thousands of dollars, out of my pricerange and interest.

Other coins to look out for are the wavy baseline 20 cent of 1966, the 10c/$1 mule of 2000, 2 cent piece with initials "SD" missing, double bar variety on the 1979 and 1980 50 cent, maybe other too, I'm not sure. Also the incuse flag on the 2000 Millenium 50 cent.
Not all these are valuable.

There's probably heaps of others too, but I dont have a catalog.

1852 Adelaide Pound, Type 1 - aUnc $275,000.00
1852 Adelaide Pound, Type 2 - aUnc $50,000.00
1923 King George V Half-Penny - aUnc $35,000.00
1930 King George V Penny - aUnc $170,000.00
1922/21 Overdate - aUnc $85,000.00

I only listed their About Uncirculated prices for most of these coins, but needless to say their Choice Uncirculated/Gem prices are even more phenomenal!

Am I the only one who finds it mildly hilarious that Australia Post doesn't have online ordering? They should try moving into the 20th century.

Hilarious isn't the word. They've got to be the most backward qango or ex Comm Gov't Dept around. Overseas people can order online from Aus Post, but not Aust residents. How on earth do they figure that out

You've forgotten the square pennies, dropped 1 Indian 1931 penny, gold proofs, and of course, the king of all Aussie coins, the 1920S Sovereign. This is THE most expensive coin in the Australian series, with a recent sale by Barrie Windsor of close to $600 000. (He bought this coin from KJC Auctions for $500 000 plus comm, so Mr Windsor made a killing on it!)

How rare did you want Gary? Those mentioned above are the most rare but many other predecimal coins are scarce, especially in good condition. Australia has a low population so they never minted that many coins for us in the first place. Many early predec silvers were melted down to help pay for the war effort so early George V florins are going up up and away in price, especially in better grades.

Thanks everyone for your great answers.

I should point out that my wife and I are retired teachers, and there is no way we could ever afford the Australian rarities. The question was simply one of curiosity.

Thanks to four different Australians on the CCF, I am building up a good number of Aussie coins, and hope to start collecting them by year in the near future.

Thanks again for all the input. I appreciate it.

By the way, what would a 1930 penny in average condition cost?

Guess I need to learn to read better. Snooba had already answered my 1930 penny question.

Thanks Snooba. Also, markn.

Gary:

1930 Penny - VG $23,000.00, F $34,000.00, VF $48,000.00, EF $120,000.00, aUnc $170,000.00, Unc $240,000.00, ChUnc $350,000.00, Gem $5000,000.00, Proof $675,000.00

Naturally, I have several dozen of these just lying around in my collection. In fact, I now have so many, that I only collect them in Gem and Proof!
