So I see a lot of talk here and there about type sets. Is this just what it sounds like? A coin of every type? Do you go for a best grade of each type deal? I have always been wishy washy and going hard on mercurys for a month then ih cents then moragans. What are advantages of this, to use as referances?

It's for those folks that are kind of undecided on what type they want to collect. Or for those that want one of everything. Or like you said, it can be used as a reference. I always find that putting one together will give you a general idea of which one to collect full force after you complete a type set.

The toughest part is learning how to grade all of those coins. Myself, I only consider proficient at grading barber and Seated coinage, with maybe a bit of bust half, Peace dollar and Indian cent thrown in. The 7070 is a good way to expand horizons and it help keep someone engaged in case they get tired of looking at just one coin type.

The 7070 is the most common album that people do for the typeset. Other sets have different numbers.

I have collections of almost all american coins minted by the US mint from the 1790's forward in Dansco albums. Alot of them are complete. But the older sets are very expensive, and like the barber series there are a huge number of coins in each denomination. So What I did was to complete a type set including gold in a 7070 dansco album. That gives me an example of each coin minted by the us mint, and greatly saves, alot of money investing in the set of earlier more expensive coins.

Not necessarily true for everyone who collects type coins. I know exactly what I want and I do not want one of everything. Type sets present unique challenges and looking at page after page of the same coin does not appeal to me. My two newest projects are a complete major type set of all six denominations of the Seated Liberty coinage plus an example of each branch mint for each denomination. Minimum grade is AU-50. There will be 8 Half Dimes, 11 dimes, 3 Twenty Cent Pieces, 11 quarters, 14 half dollars and 5 dollars in the "set" when done. The second is a major type set of Liberty gold coins, 2 1/2, 5, 10 and 20 dollars, the 10 dollar Indians and the 20 dollar St. Gaudens, excluding the ultra high relief and wire rim types, with additional examples of each branch mint for each denomination.
