On an auction I recently won on ebay, this was in the shipment confirmation the seller sent me.

"P.S. Reciprocal Feedback has been queued to be left for you AUTOMATICALLY as soon as our auction management system detects feedback as being received from you. This is done automatically a few seconds after you leave feedback for us."

I think that isn't right to withhold feedback until they get one from you.

This is a tough topic. Many sellers withhold feedback until the buyer leaves feedback to ensure that they receive the positive feedback that they hopefully deserve. Although I do not completely agree with this approach, I suppose I can understand where they are coming from. On ebay feedback means a great deal and a small percentage of buyers either do not leave it, or are VERY, VERY slow at doing so and require a great deal of persuasion to receive a simple feedback.

Personally, I leave feedback the moment someone has paid and kindly ask them to leave feedback as soon as they receive the coin. If they have not left feedback within a few days, I contact them directly.

I am worried about this method. What if I left a negative or neutral feedback? I fear retaliation feedback.

Ah, not one of my favorite topics. As I stated on your other thread, it has happened to me many times and I have not ever done it to others. For example I have left 113 feedback to sellers and I have only receive 103, this includes NARU's. I am not a big time dealer and my FB is from 1999. So as you can see ebay is not my primary function, although I do pop in thar almost everyday, I do not buy/sell there everyday--Feedback though is a very sore subject with many, as this person you r posting here does, you give me posi FB you'll get yours...it is only fair. I usually do it right, I sell, you pay, I get paid, you get posi feedback next time I go on ebay, irregardless what you leave me---It is the way its suppose to work anyways--Any restrictions I avoid the auction. If I knew you were not going to give me feedback I would not bid on your item..

nds76, I think your fears are quite justified. This is nothing but a technique for extorting positive feedback from you. I have little doubt the seller's automated system will withhold its feedback if it detects that the buyer has left a neutral or negative.

ebay's feedback system makes it quite clear that once a buyer has paid for an item, his/her part of the transaction is satisfactorily completed and the seller should post positive feedback. While some people don't see it this way (and perhaps with justified reason), it's the way the system is set up. Unfortunately, until ebay revises its feedback system into something more equitable, the seller has the buyer in a vulnerable position. Such an improved system might include withholding of feedback posting until BOTH parties have posted; in this manner, the feedback deserved by the other is honestly given without fear of retaliation.

I know that my feelings on this are not popular, but we do sell on ebay for a living and there are a number of reasons for a seller not leaving feedback first.

First of all, we used to take the time to leave feedback first in the beginning and only about half of the buyers would bother to reciprocate. This makes it a waste of time.

Second, the transaction is not complete for us until the buyer is satisfied. That means that, even if they are unhappy with their purchase, we get a chance to make it right - whether that be by return/refund, partial refund, or whatever. Once a seller has left feedback, buyers are more apt to just leave negative feedback without contacting the seller to provide a chance for a satisfactory resolution. This is unfair of the buyer. Believe me when I tell you that some of the buyers out there who are just as unreasonable as some of the sellers.

Do I think feedback should be withheld in order to blackmail a buyer into positive feedback - Absolutely not! But the transaction is not complete until the buyer is happy. Even when I purchase, I never expect the seller to leave feedback first. Whether I'm going to leave a positive or a negative, I leave my feedback first and let the chips fall where they may. (And I have received a neg for this, though I'd do it again.)

Okay, guys, go ahead and shoot me down!

Generally when I sell something I leave a feedback as soon as payment is received and before I ship out the item. Also it's a good way to see when your payment arrived to whom ever your buying from.

I am annoyed as a buyer when a seller does not leave any feedback at all. I looked up the "Left for Others" feedback on a seller with over 1000 feedbacks and saw he/she stopped leaving feedback on their buyers in August of 2004! Yet about 200 buyers had the courtesy to leave them feedback after that date! Bad Business, I will not buy from them again as I feel that feedback is a good way for the seller to Thank You for buying from them and helps build a good reputation for me as a buyer. I actually mailed this seller three times asking for feedback and never got a response! Mike

We send email notifications for receipt of the payment and for shipping. Our customers know what's going on every step of the way. They also get a letter with the shipment with a handwritten and signed "Thank you" note at the bottom.

I think that the whole feedback system should be reworked specifically for this reason. Powersellers hold such a stronghold on the buyers that it provides no "real" idea of how good a seller is. I hear many times how a small ebay buyer is "afraid" to leave a negative. That is just 1 more reason I stay away from this market.

On those rare occasions that I sell, I wait until either 1. the buyer emails me to tell me they received the coin and are satisfieed or 3. the buyer leaves feedback or 1. my return period has greatly expired.

As far as being a buyer, I could not care less whether the seller leaves me feedback or not but I always try to remember to leave the seller feedback.
