How can you tell the difference between a 1920 three pence type 1 (92.5% silver) and type 2 (50% silver). They look exactly the same to me, and according to what I can find, they weigh the same.

The one I have came from a dealer who says it's type 1, but I am always skeptical.

Forgive me, but it's hard for me to believe there is nobody out there who can answer this question for me.

So -- let me try this: are there really two types of the 1920 three pence? Or are they all 92.5% silver? Or all 50%?

Yes, 1920 threepence struck in both .5000 and sterling silver. But I have no idea how to distinguish them. From what I read they are looking identical and I haven't found any info on figuring them out. I don't even see separate mintage figures.

Your dealer might be just optimistic - either way he would be 50:50 right.

Well, I thought perhaps a dealer in the U.K. might be able to shed light, so I emailed the question to one R. Ingram of Southampton, who said this:

"It can be tricky. The colour of the metal is the key. 92.5% is more silvery whereas the 50% is more pale and sometime has a slight greenish tinge to it."

So, there you are. Nobody knows, but judging by the patina, I think mine is 50%.

There is a similar question around the 1967 dime and quarter in Canada where half were made with 80% silver and half with 50% silver. I have not seen a reliable way to tell which is which that doesn't involve damaging the coin or high tech lab equipment. Some claim you can tell by the quality of the ring it makes when you drop it onto a hard surface. The general consensus seems to be just value them based on 65% silver content (the average) when dealing with bulk lots.
