I have asserted on my site that this is a fake Trade dollar:

http://yardsellr.com/for_sale?utm_c...llar-2315727

I don't collect Trade dollars, but this looks wrong to me, especially in the leaves (reverse). Any way you cut it, it's significantly overpriced.

Am I nuts to think it's fake?

Scropper..the 1877s that I'm looking at right now does not have the same wreath berries on the reverse....don't know if they changed the dies that much from year to year...one I'm looking at weighs 27.1, and is the right diameter...not as nice as yours ,but a fraction of the price....I've been warned also....hope this helps

There are more fake Trade dollars on the market than genuine ones it seems. :-)

The one you've listed raises some red flags to my eye, but I'd have to take a closer look at the pictures when I'm not squinting at them on my iPhone.

It's counterfeit. Look at the denticles and compare to a genuine coin ... not close. Also the motto "In God we Trust" is all over the place. On a genuine coin you can draw a straight line across the top and bottom. Finally, on a genuine Trade dollar the Eagles eye is half-closed. This one looks like he's just drank a can of Jolt.

Excellent, thank you for backing me up. It struck me immediately as counterfeit because it's simply a raw Trade on "yardsellr". Then I got paranoid - I hate to call out a "good guy", but this guy is clearly not a good guy. $850 for a counterfeit. If he thought it was real, he'd price it accordingly. I grade it net VG to F given the harsh cleaning, but then, so an outrageous price might be $300. He probably did the harsh cleaning to distract the unwary from the fact that it's FAKE. Oh well.

Can't see it. I don't have a facebook account and don't intend to get one just so I can sign up with the site to look at the coin
