I am still settling my Aunt's estate and have a question for you all regarding the coins we sold at auction. We need to know the value of the set in 1992 (that was the year my uncle died)for tax purposes. Is there a source I can research their values then?

S50C PCGS MS63
G$1 PCGS MS64+
G$2.50 PCGS MS65
G$50 PCGS MS63

Thanks again for all your help--------

Is the $50 piece round or octoganal?

I certainly recall the great fun we all had supporting you and your family during the 'discovery' and subsequent auction of this fabulous set.

For the new members who missed the fun:

Some thoughts for 1992 valuations ....

1. The 1992 RedBook will list all of them. It is a standard accepted reference in the numismatic world ... albeit a bit on the high side for valuations.

2. You could search auction catalogs from 1991 through 1993 ... these will show 'actual' sales prices ... but that would be a bit of work ... and it's possible that your $50 Gold did not even sell during that time period.

3. The publication known as Coin Dealer Newsletter was around in 1992 ... they have accurate prices for the coins at the time of (now) weekly publication.

4. There were a number of periodicals in publication in 1992 (Coin World, Coin Prices, etc) that list retail prices.

I personally do not have access to any of these sources from 1992 ... hoping a member will show up shortly with access to one of them for you to use.

This is probably your best bet as pulling auction records from multiple sources could be an arduous task. Auction sales records from that time period would not be available online so the only source would be printed auction catalogs from 20 years ago that very few collectors would own.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. You guys are very kind.

I am attempting to contact the specialist who handled the auction for HA tomorrow. When I tried to lookup past realized prices on their site today, it was down! I hope he has access to the publications since my library was not very helpful in this area.

The folks who publish the Coin Dealer Newsletter referenced above also publish CDN Graph Books which chart the historical prices across all of the US coin series. They have a book dedicated to the silver commem series as well as one dedicated to the gold series.

As each of the commem books begins with prices from 1980 and continues on to 2011, you should be able to find what you need.

You can order them via the following link: http://www.greysheet.com/web_order/books_form.asp

You may want to try David Hall at PCGS, he or they may have some information from their records seeing as how they are in PCGS holders.

Thanks again to you all. I spoke to the new specialist at HA and he has given me the info we needed.

Amazing what their values were even back in 1992.

Excellent ... pleased that you have the data you need ... and say again that I enjoyed the story of the fabulous set and your family's efforts to sell it for a fair price.

I'm proud of the CCF members who provided some input ... and thrilled that it all worked out for you and your family.

Your Aunt would have proud of the care and deliberation you took to appropriately sell this valuable set from her collection.

Well done I say.

Be well in your life travels ...

David
