It used to be easy to tell where a note originated from because it was printed right on the note in plain English. How do you now determine which region a note originated from or does the Fed not even concern themselves with that anymore? If there is a code in the serial number that identifies this, is there a website that decodes them for us?

Yes, for the newer notes the second letter of the serial # is the branch letter. These are for the $5 and up notes. The $1 note still uses the first letter.

This has a nice map of the Districts:

1 = A
2 = B
etc

Also, the BEP has some nice info on the serial #s too:

Thanks, that was helpful! On a side note...no pun intended....when do the newest $100s come out?

It was supposed to be out about 2 years ago, but they were having some problems and never got them resolved. I haven't see an update in over a year about it and nothing is found on their web site anymore. They have spent a ton of time and money into it and I don't think they even know when it'll be released.
