Should the top of the type and dates be toward the Obverse of the coins in both cases?

Do you mean the lettering on the edge, if so they come in both the A and B position, for business strikes, proofs only come in position A, I believe

Yes I did mean the lettering on the edge.

That was an extremely confusing choice of words. and as the others have said, they come in both, but it always annoys me to have the letters facing the reverse.

Found my first pres dollar with the type facing the reverse. Thought I might have an error. Where can I find info to read on this.
