While searching through some old boxes that belonged to my father-in-law, my wife and I found this coin. I haven't been able to find anything like it online and thought the specialists here might be able to help.

Dont take my word for this, but the lined boxes on the coat of arms might represent Aragon. That can mean that the coin is Spanish. just guessing though.

Unfortunately, this is a very commonly encountered "pirate coin" brass replica. The original coins, which date from Spain in the time of Ferdinand and Isabella (early 1500s), were silver. Here's another thread with one.

Outstanding! I appreciate the rapid response Sap!

I read the thread you linked, and followed links to other threads where swamperbob discussed the fakes in detail. This coin matches his descriptions of a "Modern tourist copy". This makes a lot of sense considering odd text, reversed letters etc.

I love the internet.... :)
