I'm just back from a short visit with relatives in Indiana but found my coin in a small shop in Kentucky. I almost never stop in coin shops along the road when travelling (so few have ancients) but am glad I did this time.

Does my new coin is an upgrade over my old half a coin? The dupondius showing Augustus right and Agrippa left issued by the colony at Nemausus commemorated the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra (crocodile chained to a palm). Sometimes these are found cut in half to make an as. My new one is a whole dupondius but the reverse is so bad compared to the decent obverse that it is almost like still having half - just the obverse half. As these go, this is a pretty good obverse with clear rostral crown on Agrippa and approximately even strike between the two heads. These are notorious for being unevenly struck or off center. The reverse is poor with very weak COL and missing NEM legend, barely visible palm and no chain at all. The fact remains that I could not afford one of these with this obverse and equally nice reverse so I am happy to have found it. Maybe I'll find one with a nice reverse someday.

I've had my half for several years and nicely halved coins are hard to find. While this is no great beauty, at least I got the half with the crocodile's front.

Gee Doug that reverse is so bad I think you need to get rid of it. If you send it to me I'll despose of it for you.

Nice coin and a lucky find.

Ummmm? ... it's a bit of a toss-up, but I like the new coin better => the obverse is far more appealing ... plus, even the crocodile seems a little less cartoon than it does in your original version, no? (however, you're correct => the reverse on the new coin is a bit less pollished ... so again, it's a bit of a toss-up!!?

... they're both very cool!! (I'd like to see the other sides of the half-coins)

"Two heads are better than one"--I prefer the whole coin too.

I have been on the hunt for this croc for some time now and just haven't found one in my price range. YET! Good pickup. Maybe I should stop into coin shops when travelling around. Your new coin is fantastic while, even so, I'd take the half coin in lieu of none.

Keep 'em all! Each is unique in it's own way. It's just too bad that WE miss out! I have yet to come across a bisected second brass.

"... they're both very cool!! (I'd like to see the other sides of the half-coins)"
There is one halved coin. Both sides are shown. What made this one special was the way the two sides lined up. I bought this one back in 2001 from a dealer who had a group of halves (mostly crocs but a few other types) selecting this one over the ones with crocodile tails or that were cut other than between the two portraits. Coins that were not aligned as well did not look as good when cut on a diagonal. Thinking back, I probably should have bought several but they struck me as expensive for damaged coins but still very interesting.

a) highlight the sentence that you'd like to quote, then right-click and choose "copy"

b) paste it into your reply

c) type [ quote] before the pasted text

d) type [ /quote] after the pasted text

NOTE => dougsmit, don't actually type the empty spaces after the first quote marks ... I merely typed the empty spaces in my instructions, otherwise it took my instructions to you and posted them as a quote!!

==> voila

... ask me again, if my instructions were a bit confusing

I've been after a full coin of this type for a while but after reading this post I think a half coin will do.

Doug, I had to ask the same question. When you select "reply to post", you will see a "Format" line. The second from last bullet is "insert quote". Select the quote you wish, copy it, and paste it between the parenthesis. Fairly easy once you do it.

thanks jwharper ... I have been "manually" typing-in the words "quote" on each end of the sentence, rather than using the "bullet"

=> man, I always do "stuff" the hard way!!
